ro Binnale 13th 2019 With the return of the International Cairo Biennale to the Egyptian cultural map after nine
years of absence, my feelings as an artist, as an official, and even as an ordinary citizen flow
and combine; with every step forward, there is a sense of pride, hope, and confidence.
Firstly, as an artist, I think the sense of the value of the Egyptian creator with his important
role, as one of the original tools of Egypt’s soft power, is renewed. He emphasizes the pro-
gress of the modern building of the state with steps appreciating and respecting creativity,
motivated to present himself in a way that truly expresses the significant position and pio-
neering status of the wonderful and great legacy of the eternal art.
As an official, I am proud to witness the highest levels of attention, care, and awareness
led by Prof. Inas Abdel Dayem, Minister of Culture, to preserve Egypt’s historical position
among the world’s countries. Since its last twelfth edition in December 2010, the Cairo Bi-
ennale has been absent from the art scene due to known difficulties posing a challenge that
has never weakened our determination, but, on the contrary, pushed us to keep working
and searching for a new birth ensuring that it keeps pace with the ancient biennales on the
international scene.
It is no coincidence that the Cairo Biennale comes back in parallel with successive achieve-
ments at the economic, social, health, sport, and cultural levels. It is a new testimony show-
ing the faith and confidence of the Egyptians in today and tomorrow and proves the belief
of the leadership in the abilities and patriotism of the Egyptians and their love for their
homeland. Its comeback creates a modern version of both dream and history on the land,
where multiple civilizations and cultures are intertwined, and which still opens its arms to
creativity and creators from everywhere. I hope that the thirteenth edition of the Biennale
will be a great addition enriching its history. Greetings and appreciation to the organizing
committees, the Artistic Director, and the workgroup. Welcome to all the participating art-
ists, with my best wishes of success to all.
