by currently displayed piece of relief
sculpture which embodies King Fouad,
executed by Muhammad Abdel Hamid
Metwally who was a member of a
mission by King Fouad to Berlin in the
early 1930s to study the scientific and
practical aspects of marble and granite.

Through what published at some
Egyptian magazines at that time, we find
that the artist sent this artwork to the
Ministry of Education, as a gift to King
Fouad, after it was executed in one of
Berlin factories from the Bavarian green
marble.

King Farouk I (1965-1920) continued
to maintain his father’s approach to this
patronage and regularity of opening art
and public exhibitions by himself. That is
what was registered by the media on many
occasions. Most notably what happened
at the beginning of his reign, when he
opened the 18th Cairo Salon in April
1938, attended by the prime minister,
ministers, deputy ministers, governor of
Cairo, and Muhammed Mahmoud Khalil
(1953-1877), Chairman of the Society of
Fine Arts Lovers then.

The exhibition also witnessed the
attendance of Queen Nazli (1978-1894),
mother of King Farouk, his sister Princess
Fawzia Fouad (2013-1921) and his wife
Queen Farida (1988-1921).

Farouk’s passion and patronage of News of dedication of the previous artwork to King Fouad as
art had a resonance that exceeded the published in Cairo newspaper on April 6th, 1934.
