As for the paintings inspiring the viewer with the wild
primitive life and the charming pristine nature, drawn by the
modernist French artist Paul Gauguin (1903-1848), their beauty
stems from the simplification and flattening of shapes, and
the symbolic use of shape and color. Thus, the art of Gauguin
is considered as a step towards freeing Symbolism from its
literary form. This artistic style divides the space of the painting
into successive parts to express the spatial depth symbolically.
Despite his connection to nature, Gauguin’s artistic imagery
used in depicting his painting, “Life and Death” was more
abstract. In this painting, the artist abandoned the use of
shadows to preserve the clarity of colors, while surrounding
the shapes with lines of certain clarity and harmony. It
portrays two naked girls, one symbolizing life and the other
symbolizing death. The artist created a still, mysterious, and
magical atmosphere in this metaphorically dominated painting
by employing the potentials of color and emotion. The viewer
will enjoy it if he follows the curves of the lines and their
harmonious rhythm and realizes the degree of saturation of
colors with light, just as he enjoys the power of lines, the style
of composition, and the intensity of emotion. The artist found
a way of expression that achieved the legendary simplicity in
his artwork. It is known that Gauguin used to paint landscapes
from the islands of the southern sea Tahiti to express purity and
to see the memory of the magical pristine nature combined
with the dreamy spiritual and imaginative inspirations,
appearing more charming as much as it is mysterious. Through
his paintings, the artist seemed as if he depicted ordinary
people having no needs and practicing strange rituals.
When museum exhibitions focus on identifying, presenting,
interpreting, and studying their collected masterpieces, they
achieve their objectives. The typical museum exhibitions are
supposed to serve the public as an educational institution
concerned with the diversity of cultures. In this case, it will
provide support for learning programs, the conduct of research
related to serving a diverse audience of different ages and
levels of knowledge, through displaying the art collections for
understanding and appreciating both art and the world where
we live.
