In the city of Damietta, where the river Taha Hussien
and the sea meet at Ras El-Bar, Selim
was born and lived in his early formative
years. There, he found the homeland,
where the freshwater and saltwater meet;
he felt the miracle of the wonderful
nature and the equation of body and
soul. In the elementary school, that
precedes the primary stage, Selim went
out, burdened with books in the morning
of a bitter winter and snow fell heavily
like rain. On his way back home, he used
to pass by the nuns' school. The orange
lights coming out of the stained glass
fascinated him in a cold morning, which
made him see the flickers of the bright
colors in the paintings of the pioneer of
impressionism Claude Monet a long time
before he knew them.

The Arabic language is of great importance
to teachers. They draw students' attention to
its figures of speech and its beauty, paying
special attention to the beauty of handwriting.
Selim remembered his teacher, Mr. Mohamed
Radwan when he was passing through lines,
tucking peanuts from the chaff as if it was a
dramatic scene in an ethereal story.

In summer, his family used to pack their Portrait
luggage and take a boat out to Ras El-Bar.
He chose a matchbox, which he filled
with shells and stones, acting like adults.
After the three-month summer vacation,
the family returned to Damietta town,
which is very clean and whose people
are known for their honesty, respect for
time, and eagerness to work. They work
hard, without relying on "luck", which is
the characteristic distinguishing artificers
from farmers.

At the end of the forties, Selim's father moved to Fayoum, whose people are
practical. They live in a city, where the famous Bahr Youssef and Lake Moeris exist.
There, Selim noticed that Fayoum people did not pronounce the last letters of the
words.
