Page 254 - Features of an Era
P. 254
In this exhibition, we watch a set of events and artworks of special historical
nature, related to some well-known figures of a period replete with events and
transformations. In fact, we do not present purely historical events but we simply
recall social, cultural and political transformations of an entire century during an
era full of global, regional and internal ones. Such transformations reflected in the
modern Egyptian art, represent a basic part of our cultural fabric and witness the
interactions of a past century, by which forms of developments have been created in
our modern society.

Presentation on the Exhibition

According to the concept quoted above, the current exhibition is held to scrutinize
the mentioned era through displaying artworks which represent the main figures of
some symbols of this epoch. Most of these works are sculptures, paintings as well as
some photographs. Such works have been selected in accordance with the events
they are linked to and because some of them, created by internationally and locally
famous artists, represent an aesthetic and artistic value. For this, they are not just
figures or commemorative artworks but go beyond that due to their significance and
value for the historical chronicle. In addition to the main works of the exhibition,
personal collections belonging to a number of mentioned figures are on view. These
collections represent a bunch of commemorative medals connected with events
linked to the general context of the exhibition and they also shed light on important
historical events. Furthermore, the collection includes some furniture and pots highly
relevant to the theme and context of the exhibition on the aesthetic and historical
level. The exhibits highlight some important historical events which shaped the urban
context of Egypt during the stage of transformation from the first half of the twentieth
century to the second half of it. This will be shown in this study, the context of
the exhibition, and the accompanying interpretations and images in its space. These
works of the exhibition are divided into two groups: first one represents the works
which are on display and related to a number of events referred to them directly. The
second one features works connected with persons whom the figures represent or
shaped by. These figures are associated directly with these events or the outcomes
have been reflected effectively on them or on another most famous works which
aimed to honor those figures in the past. So, the context has required mentioning
them in detail, in the study as well as in the explanations in the exhibition space,
despite of not being on display as it is revealed fully in the study.
