Oumar Ball was born in 1985 in Bababé, on the border with Cairo Binnale 13th 2019
Senegal, south of Mauritania where he started practising sculp-
ture from the age of nine. Then, he discovered painting thanks to
his father who was the painter and photographer of the village.
On the passing of his grandmother, he moved to his parents
in Nouakchott. He had strong feelings towards his childhood
environment. His artistic approach is strongly imbued with sen-
sations and objects from this era. I would like to express a sim-
ple life that tends to disappear with its beauty, and the peace
of those who live modestly but in harmony with nature. Also,
I want to show that Africa is only a misery, destruction or war.
“For my family, I am the one who does not throw anything, on
the contrary, brings wastes to home. I like a lot to produce my
works from the materials around me. In my point of view, each
material has a soul which gives meaning to my projects.” As
the painter and the director Française Françoise Dexmier says:
“Through every gesture, line and colour, Oumar wants to pay
tribute to those who live modestly.
Despite his young age, Oumar has already caught the attention
of the art world.
At the age of 15, he exhibited for the first time at the French
Cultural Center in Nouakchott. Then he participated in several
artist-in-residence programs in France: the Cité internationale
des arts in Paris, in Spain and Senegal. His latest project, a se-
ries of paintings about things from the daily life were shown at
Grand Palais in Paris as part of Art Paris Art Fair and AKAA by
Atiss DAKAR Gallery.
He has created grand installations made of metal, on the theme of
“Flying” on the occasion of Biennale DAK’ART 2016 and 2018.
