وقد أصبحت سيارات الأجرة الصفراء هذه الموجودة في كل مكان هي أداة لوضع إطار للنظر إلى المدين�ة سواء من
نافذة لسيارات الأجرة بأشكال مختلفة التي تذكرنا باللوحات40 حصل الفنانان على،منظور سينمائي أو خاص

To the people of Cairo
For the Cairo Biennale 2019 Broomberg and Chanarin will produce a new body of work
that takes the iconic cairo taxi as their inspiration. These ubiquitous yellow taxis become a
framing devise for looking at the city - both a cinematic and private perspective. The artists
have acquired 40 taxi windows of various shapes that recall the curved canvases of the
German painter Blinky Palermo. Palermo’s last series of painting before he died, titled ’to
the people of New York City, is a love letter in colour. Inspired by this work, Broomberg and
Chanarin have composed a letter of their own, to the people of cairo, that reflects on notions
of nationalism and an enduring sense of homesickness. Their installation, an assemblage of
taxi windows that have been obscured by block colours, in the same colour palette inspired
by Palermo, suggest a narrative of privacy and mystery that speaks to the biennale theme of
looking east
