El-Gedida, taken in October 2017 by Yasser Mongy

The palace was designed by the French architect Alexandre Marcel (1928-1860)
and was built between 1908 and 1909. «According to the design plan adopted by
Marcel, the exterior design of the palace was completely depending on structural
and visual elements inspired by Islamic architectural styles; it was reflected on the
composition of its famous tower that is similar to the composition of the minaret; the
dome is with Muqarnas which is in the middle of the ceiling in the main hall and
with rib vaults, balconies, windows and fenced stairs(21).

After the death of Sultana Melek, the palace turned into Misr El-Gedida Secondary
School for Girls, before the school was later moved to a building adjacent to the
palace; the building courtyard was connected to the palace and its garden.
