tue was a gift from the Italian community in Alexandria for Egypt’s hosting of the
King Vittorio Emanuele III (1947-1869), the last king of Italy after being overthrown.
The original base of the statue –currently the Unknown Soldier Memorial- is designed
in the roman style by the architect Ernesto Verrucci Bey (1945 – 1874), the supervisor
of the royal palaces at that time and the one who produced the architectural design
of the High Court of Justice in Cairo.

A maquette for the statue of Khedive Isma’il project in Alexandria. The statue is on its pedestal in the
middle of the memorial. This maquette is on display at Muhammad Ali dynasty Hall at National Military

Museum at Salah El-Din Citadel in Cairo.
