Inauguration of the 25th Alexandria Biennale
 
The selection of the participant artworks at 25th edition of Alexandria Biennale were according to the direct coordination with the artists not through countries` nomination like in former editions. This was announced at the press conference of Alexandria Biennale being attended by a well-respected group of journalists, fine artists beside the higher committee of the biennale headed by artist Mohsen Shaalan, Head of the Fine Arts Sector, Mohamed Abouelnaga, the Curator and the Jury Committee headed by Fomio Nango. During the conference the attendance discussed the criteria which the jury followed in the entire selection process and the development stages of the Alexandria Biennale during the former editions. The press conference was followed by the inauguration of the biennale. Artist Farouk Hosni, Minister of Culture together with Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria and artist Mohsen Shaalan, Head of the Fine Arts Sector have inaugurated the event. The biennale included several artworks from various artistic trends and schools among which; craving, photography, painting, measurement in void and video art. Some 17 Mediterranean countries represented by 34 artists have participated at the biennale. Artist Soha Shoman and the Italian artist Michel Anglo Bietsolito were invited as the guests of honor of the biennale. The members of the Jury Committee are the artists: Fomio Nango from Japan, Daniela Jio from Brazil, Elizabeth Dylan Hansen from Denmark, Hadil Nazmy from Egypt, Rayyan Abdullah from Iraq, Emily Do Hearty from Britain and James Hearths from the United States of America. The committee has announced the winners of the biennale awards. Artist Wael Sawky from Egypt has won the Grand Prize `Alexandria Beacon`, which reaches 100,000 Egyptian Pounds, for his work `Crusades`. The other three biennale prizes, which reaches to 35,000 Egyptian pounds each, have been attained by artists Dowrith Bittar from Lebnon for her work `East in the eyes of West`, Safaa Al Rawas, from Morocco for her work `the Moon Inside Me` and artist Taisser Barakat, from Palestine for his work `Dust-Dialogue-Iron`. The jury prize has gone to artists Veliryano Lopez from Spain, Nadia Kaabi Linki from Tunsia. The event runs until January 31.
