Ahmed Fouad Selim, the Artist Who Played with Feather and Pencil, and Drew Music
He loved the cinema, like me. I used to love drawing and sculpture, like him. As I went in
for the cinema after studying theater, he went in for the fine arts after studying law. We
were brought together by the belief in the unity of knowledge and unity of arts, as well as
the belief in the three freedoms: freedom of the artist, freedom of the viewer, and freedom
of the critic. Through him, in that large apartment overlooking Mustafa Kamel Square, I
knew the late artist Hamed Nada and other great artists as Saleh Reda, Ramzy Mustafa,
Mohamed Taha Hussein, the late filmmaker Mamdouh Shoukry and other prominent
filmmakers, including Ghaleb Shaath, Mohamed Rady, Ra'afat El-Mihi, Madkour Thabet,
Mohamed Kamel El-Qalyoubi and Khairy Beshara.
I lived with the artist, who played with feather and pencil, and drew music in his paintings,
H e did not ask her to his love story with the pianist Marcelle Matta until they married.
change her religion. They had Amira, who has become anopera singer in the cities
of Egypt and Europe. My heart is with both of them and with those who know Selim’s
irreplaceable great value.
