noted above, all the evidence was
completed with the data found in the
official museum record documenting
the bronze copy of the statue displayed
in this exhibition, asserting Metwally’s
authorship of the statue. The evidence
was supported by the comparison of the
composition and details of the copy with
the details of the archival picture of the
first gypsum copy of the statue referred
to by the late sculptor El-Fiqi at the end
of his talk.
This rare picture demonstrates the slight
modifications made by Mustafa Metwally
to the bronze copy of the statue, which is
mainly seen in the position of the right
foot and the angle of the head.

Mentioned previously by Dr. El-

Fiqi, Dr. Samy Farag, who was said to

participate with Metwally in designing Statue of Khedive Isma’il of Isma’iliya Square,
the Cairene statue of Khedive Isma’il, was currently Tahrir Square, in Cairo, by Mustafa
a professor of anatomy in the Faculty of Metwally. A rare picture of the gypsum copy of the
Medicine (Qasr Al-Aini) and the Faculty statue before casting in bronze. Source: The late
artist Dr. Abdel Megid El-Fiqi
of Fine Arts. «He was one of the art fans

who loved the art of sculpture since a

quarter of a century and participated in many public exhibitions. His works of art are

characterized by realism and deep anatomical study. He excels in sculpting statues.

He also created a group of plastic arts at the Faculty of Medicine that holds annually

a serious art exhibition,»(28)

From the history of the Egyptian press appears another hard proof of the Egyptian
authorship of this statue, starting from the design to the final casting. An invitation to
open bid for casting the statue was announced by the Department of Public Buildings
of the Ministry of Public Works then in several Egyptian newspapers and magazines
in mid1951-, which denies all the claims circulated in some unspecialized writings
on the alleged roles of Italy in sculpting or casting this statue.
